CSQ Swimmer Profile: Rachel Desoer

Nickname: Rachel “Tadpole” Desoer

From: Hamilton, ON

Height: 5 ft 13 in

Although given the name Rachel by her parents, Rachel often answers to the names Rebecca, Sarah or any other name starting with an ‘R’. Her last name is Desoer (pronounced da sore). She will however, accept any pronounciation other than ‘desewer’, which she finds offensive. She was born at Mcmaster hospital in ‘the Hammer’, Ontario. At the age of 19 she gave up her lifelong ambition of being the first female butler after a dear friend made disparaging remarks about her abilities in the service industry. She then focused her attention on swimming at Juilliard, Oberlin, Mcgill and The Banff Centre. The result of her time at these schools was one bachelor degree in music, a deep love of chamber music and a low level of aquatic ability and fitness. As the newest member of the Cecilia Quartet she complains about the amount of music she has to learn, shuns administrative tasks and has yet to host a quartet event. She intends to keep these new member privileges as long as possible.

Nickname: Caitlin “Samurai” Boyle

From: Dundas, ON

Strengths: using her upper arm strength to feed lots of music scores through the photocopier

 

Renowned violist Caitlin Boyle is praised for her ability to be ‘just good enough’ and for tone production described as ‘scratch and win.’  Making her debut at the Carnegie** at the age of eighteen, she has since been invited back every year to perform solo repertoire.  After a rigorous audition process, beating out many other violists using various means of weapons, drugs and emotional blackmail, she landed the spot with the Cecilia String Quartet in the spring of 2006.  Ever a keener for school, due to the sense of affirmation it provides for her existence, she is hoping to become of Doctor of Viola Performance, hoping to eventually open a clinic, saving and solving every sort of viola playing problem and ailment.  On a more personal note she enjoys in taking as much liquid as possible, tabs in her binders, stapling, and buying clothes in stores without trying them on.
